Lithium battery installation

Lithium battery installation for leisure and commercial vessels

Supplying and fitting marine-grade lithium battery systems across the Solent and South Coast. From weekend sailors to liveaboards - we'll help you get more from your boat's electrics.

Why switch to lithium?

Lead-acid batteries have served boaters well for decades, but lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) technology has transformed what's possible on board.

More capacity, less weight, and a usable charge that lasts.

Significantly lighter

Lithium typically weighs 40–60% less than equivalent lead-acid banks - meaningful on any vessel.

Stable voltage

Consistent output under load means better performance.

More usable capacity

You can safely use 80–90% of a lithium battery's rated capacity versus around 50% with lead-acid.

Lower maintenance

No equalisation charges, no acid to top up. Lithium is essentially fit-and-forget, with minimal ongoing attention required.

Longer cycle life

LiFePO₄ cells are typically rated for 2,000–5,000 cycles -four to ten times that of lead-acid.

Faster charging

Lithium accepts charge at a much higher rate, cutting the time you're tied to shore power or running the engine.

What we install

Every installation is designed around your boat's actual usage pattern, existing electrical system, and charging sources. We don't sell a single package - we size the system to suit you.

AWMEL are an authorised installer and distributor for Titan Lithium.

Domestic battery banks

Cruising, liveaboard, and weekend use. Sized for your load profile and overnight anchor usage.

Hybrid systems

Combining lithium house banks with existing alternator and solar infrastructure.

Full system surveys

Not sure where to start? We'll assess your existing setup and produce a clear upgrade recommendation.

Safety: what you need to know

Lithium batteries are safe when installed correctly - but marine installations require care. The environment is demanding: salt air, vibration, bilge moisture, and the consequences of a fault at sea are far more serious than on land. That's why a professional installation matters.

At AWMEL, we specify only proven marine-grade systems from leading manufacturers including Victron Energy, Titan Lithium, Fogstar Drift & Rolls - and every installation is completed to ISO regulations.

What a proper installation includes
  • Battery Management System (BMS) correctly specified and integrated - the BMS protects against overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and thermal events

  • Charging sources assessed and upgraded if required - alternators, shore power chargers, and solar controllers must all be lithium-compatible

  • Appropriate fusing and cabling rated to the new bank's discharge capability

  • Secure, ventilated battery mounting to prevent movement and heat build-up

  • System commissioning and load testing before sign-off

Common installation risks to avoid
  • Using a non-lithium-compatible alternator without a protection relay - this can destroy both the alternator and the battery

  • Mixing old and new cells, or connecting lithium and lead-acid banks in parallel

  • Undersized cabling that can't handle lithium's higher peak current

  • No thermal cutoff in a confined battery space

  • Buying cheap unbranded cells without a verifiable BMS specification

When using manufacturer-recommended installation specialists like AWMEL this is all taken care of for you, so you have complete peace of mind.
